Contratiempo

All my adult life, I've wanted to go somewhere far away and stay there for a long time. But life's obstacles intruded -- no money, then an eat-me-alive job as a CEO, marriage and children.  Don't get me wrong. Some of these obstacles were very nice. But a time came when I had to say "it's now or never," and my family and I packed up and moved to Spain--twice. Once for eight months and the next time for six. We lived in a tiny mountain village near Granada where people travel on mules, grow olives and oranges and stir up at least a dozen fiestas each year. Our two children went to the village public school, my photographer husband took pictures, and I danced flamenco.

You know what's next. I wrote a book about it--I'm still writing it. But a chapter called "Contratiempo" will be published in the 2011 Best Women's Travel Writing in May and an excerpt of the chapter in the March  27 Boston Sunday Globe Travel Magazine.

I'll be doing readings in the coming months in Boston, New York City, maybe even Havana and Berlin. Life has a way of giving you what you want if you wish hard enough.
